Destination Guides

Every guide on this site is organised by region. Below you will find the six continent hubs, along with a few of the most useful guides in each one, so you can go straight to whichever part of the world you are planning for.

The guides follow a consistent structure: a realistic itinerary, an honest month-by-month look at when to go, where to base yourself, and what the trip actually costs.

Europe

Short flights, dense rail networks and enormous variety over small distances. The Europe guides cover the Balkans in depth alongside Christmas markets, package holidays and budget city breaks.

Asia

The continent that rewards planning more than any other, because the seasons vary enormously between regions of the same country. Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, Bali and Singapore are covered here.

Africa

Safari planning, the Moroccan medinas, ancient Egypt and the Cape. These are the guides where timing and budget matter most, so both are covered in detail.

North America

From New York and Mexico City to the Canadian Rockies, the Costa Rican cloud forest and the Hawaiian islands. A region where distances are deceptive and booking ahead genuinely matters.

South America

Altitude, distance and seasons that run opposite to the northern hemisphere. These guides cover Peru and Machu Picchu, Brazil, Argentina, Patagonia and Colombia.

Australia and Oceania

A long way from most places, and worth the journey. Australia’s cities and desert interior, the Great Barrier Reef, the New Zealand South Island and the Fijian islands.

What you will find in every guide

The destination guides are built to answer the questions that actually come up when you are planning, rather than listing sights you could find anywhere.

  • Itineraries that account for travel time, rather than assuming you teleport between stops.
  • Month-by-month timing guides, including the weeks worth avoiding and the shoulder seasons worth targeting.
  • Where to stay, broken down by neighbourhood or area with the honest trade-offs of each.
  • What it really costs, including the fees and surcharges that catch people out.
  • Practical notes on transport, etiquette, safety and what to pack.

If you are still deciding where to go, the blog has the newest guides first, and the about page explains how these are put together.
